ANKARA: A Belarusian diplomat was seriously injured late Wednesday after being shot by an unidentified attacker in the Turkish capital, international media reported.
According to the reports, the undersecretary at the Belarusian Embassy in Turkey, Alexander Poganshev, was shot while taking a walk with his 13-year-old child near the embassy.
Some reports indicated that the cause of the attack was a longstanding feud. The assailant, however, shot himself and died.
According to Sputnik News, “the perpetrator is a Turkish national and a neighbour of the diplomat. The gunman, who is also retired military man, was reportedly mentally-ill and killed himself after the attack”.
The publication said Belarusian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Anatoly Glaz confirmed that Poganshev “was in serious condition after suffering a gunshot wound” and was “receiving medical assistance”.
