Taliban Attacks Afghan Parliament
A few Taliban militant fired rockets at the parliament complex on March 29. Some lawmakers reported that the attacks did not result in casualties, but the building received some minor damages.
According to news reports, Taliban militants orchestrated the attack when top law enforcement officials were holding a meeting with the politicians. Several security issues were on the table of discussion.
Afghan Sen. Nisar Harres said that the first rocket hit an extension of the parliament complex that caused damage of small intensity. The second rocket exploded on parliamentary grounds. The third rocket hit an army base located adjacent to the parliament.
According to Harres, the parliamentary complex was not evacuated. The session was held in full swing despite the attack.
A senior security officer briefed to a news agency that the attackers fired three long-range rockets from a hilltop, which is some hundreds of yards from the parliament complex.
The lawmaker from Badakhshan province Safiullah Muslim described that Taliban militants fired three rockets. However, the rockets missed the main building. The attack took place when the parliamentary procedures were under execution, said Saifullah while speaking to a leading news agency.
The attacks carried out by the militant outfit were confirmed after its spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed the responsibility. He added that the attacks resulted in heavy casualties.
During a TV broadcast, Mohammad Abdou, the lawmaker said that the politicians were discussing the security issues of the country. It is a matter of worry because the enemy has become successful in attacking the parliament.
Taj Mohammad Jahed, the caretaker minister of interior became apologetic after he came to know about the incident. He said that such incident should have happened.
Jahed would frame fresh measures for the security of the parliamentary complex. He was about to address the parliament regarding the worsening security condition of the country when the attack took place.
During February, representatives of China, US, Pakistan and Afghanistan met for discussing the ways to negotiate with Taliban to establish peace.
According to news reports, the Afghan government had suffered a few military setbacks recently. Before the talks began, the Afghan government called back the security forces from Musa Qala district located in Helmand province.
Heavy fighting was reported from Dahana-e-Ghori district, which is situated northwest of Kabul. During 2015, around 11000 civilians lost their lives due to ambush between Taliban and military forces.
The Afghan government is finding hard to negotiate with Taliban to reach the peacemaking goals. The government is also facing challenges to make warring strategies to counteract with Taliban.
The presence of foreign military forces may weaken the decision-making capabilities of the Afghan government because most of the time it seeks helps from foreign countries for strategizing decisions.
After the presidential election of 2014, the Afghan government has still not formed a cabinet. Many educated people are leaving Afghanistan due to the economic stagnation.
Earlier this month, Taliban targeted government offices that are located in southern Helmand province. In the midst of the attack, at least, three people their lives and several wounded.
Omar Zwak said that Taliban militants targeted intelligence agency offices and police headquarters in Gereshk town that led to ambush with security forces. The fierce fight ended after eight hours. Omar is the spokesperson of Helmand’s governor.
