According to the official statement, an Indian American Doctor had been taken into custody on 39 different charges of illicit supply of prescribed opioids and healthcare fraud. The cardiologist is based in Nevada located in the regions of the U.S.
The report says, the 58-year-old doctor had purportedly given opioids like hydrocodone, fentanyl and oxycodone to his patients. Opioids are substances that affect opioid receptors to create an after effect like morphine. Medically, they are generally utilized for pain relief, as well as anaesthesia.
As per the statements from US Attorney General Jeff Sessions and other law enforcement officials, Cardiologist Devendra Patel has misused his power and allegedly prescribed aforesaid drugs devoid of legal medical reason on a usual basis from May 2014 to September 2017. Recently, few media outlets from the US have reported that Dr Devendra Patel had appeared in a Federal Court located in Reno city of Nevada and confessed his guilt. The Physician has deceitfully prescribed for Medicaid and Medicare for medical tests that had not been performed by him. The dishonest Doctor was also accused of several fraudulent activities by which he used to earn a lot of money.
Steven Myhre, the Acting US Attorney also remarked that Dr Patel would be the foremost person to be charged with the creation of the Justice Department’s Opioid Fraud and Abuse Detection Unit in Nevada. The utmost punishment for supplying a controlled substance is 10 years of imprisonment and the highest punishment for healthcare fraud is also 10 years of imprisonment. Sessions stated that they were facing the most horrible drug crises in the history of America with one American dying of a drug overdose every nine minutes. He had been scheduled to appear on the court again on January 25.
