Indian American Doctor Accused of Several Genital Mutilations on Young Girls
A physician named Jumana Nagarwala from Detroit, Michigan has been accused of performing genital mutilation on a couple of young girls. The accused Doctor has been released on an unsecured bond of $4.5 million on Nov. 21 following the imprisonment of seven months.
According to the reports, this was the highest unsecured bond in the history of Detroit federal court. Earlier, the doctor used to practise at the Henry Ford Hospital located in Detroit. Family and folks of this 44-year-old Indian American Doctor have ensured the U.S. Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Stafford that they would compensate the bail in case Nagarwala wishes to flee.
That an unsecured bond is not supported by any collateral but it is actually a written agreement that requires full payment in the absence of or violation of the conditions of her release. Nagarwala would enter the trial period in the year 2018 that involves the first case of female genital mutilation across the state. Till then, she would have to abide by the instructions of leg shackles that have been hooked up to a GPS monitor to track her activities.
Nagarwala has been prohibited from contacting victims and witnesses in this case. Neither, she would be allowed to stay at her home and contact with outsiders. Only she could meet with her young children at the time of supervised visits. The lawyer of Nagarwala, Shannon Smith remarked that she was very happy with the news of her release, especially just before the occasion of Thanksgiving. Nagarwala is among eight accused persons for cutting prepubescent girls because of a Muslim sect’s practice.
