Elected officials shared model of success with representatives from across the nation

CHICAGO – On the heels of milestone elections of Asian American candidates and in the midst of the historic 2024 Democratic National Convention and nomination of the first Asian American and Black woman for President of the United States, the Illinois Asian American Caucus shared a roadmap for successful political growth and increased representation.

“The AANHPI community is critical in helping elect Democrats up and down the ticket in Illinois and across the country. As the fastest-growing voting bloc in the nation, we all have an important role in protecting the progress made the last four years and defeating Donald Trump’s toxic agenda come November,” said U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth. “As our communities grow, it’s critical that our representation grows—and that’s exactly what we’ve seen over the past few years, and I’m so proud of the gains we’ve made.”

In only a few years, Illinois has seen a dramatic shift from 0 to 17 Asian American elected officials (in a state that’s only 7% Asian American) thanks to the Illinois Asian American Caucus’ dedication and advocacy. During Wednesday’s event, leaders convened at New Furama Restaurant to share insights, recommendations and guidance with representatives from communities across the country to mimic Illinois’ success.

“Asian Americans are not just participants in democracy – we are a driving force both as influential candidates and as a powerful voting bloc. Following a series of historic elections in Illinois and across the country, we’re marking another incredible achievement as we enthusiastically support Kamala Harris as the first Asian American candidate for President of the United States,” said Cook County Commissioner Josina Morita, founding member and Chair of the Illinois Asian American Caucus. “Today’s event is a testament to the importance of representation, and a reminder that the diversity of our party and our community is our strength.”

Following an introduction and overview of the Asian American community and its impressive political growth, Senator Tammy Duckworth, State Representative Theresa Mah, State Representative Nabeela Syed and State Senator Ram Villivalam participated in a panel discussion focused on accomplishing the Caucus’ goals of empowering the Asian American community through advocacy and legislative action.
