As the issue of migration is raging on following recent attacks on labourers from north Indian states, experts point out that a population of over five lakh workers from different states forms the core backbone of industrial manufacturing in ‘Vibrant Gujarat.’
Chinmay Tumbe, assistant professor of economics at IIM-Ahmedabad, highlighted that migrant workers make up about 70% of Surat’s industrial workforce and nearly 50% of Ahmedabad's, higher than most major cities in India.
Industrial associations warning of sharp production dips noted that textiles, ceramics in Morbi, chemicals, and engineering plants could face severe disruptions if interstate workforce stability is not promptly restored.
