Law enforcement authorities across central and northern Illinois confirmed that numerous businesses and public facilities received suspicious email threats demanding cryptocurrency ransoms on Thursday.
The Macon County Sheriff's Office confirmed A-Lert Construction received an alarming email indicating that an explosive device was hidden in their building unless bitcoin ransoms were transferred. Similar warnings were triggered across Champaign, Springfield, and the greater Chicago metro area.
Following comprehensive sweeps by local police bomb squads and federal authorities, law enforcement announced that the automated spam emails were hoax scams originating from automated overseas servers, with no credible explosive devices found.
